The back story

Pakistan Cricket Board sacked their regular captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and dropped him from the upcoming tour of Australia. Azhar Ali and Babar Azam were appointed as captains of Pakistan’s Test and T20I sides respectively- Azhar Ali for the 2019-20 season while Babar Azam till the T20 World Cup next year in Australia. Pakistan’s performance under Sarfaraz Ahmed recently declined during the World Cup and the home series disaster against Sri Lanka. But on the other hand, it was under Ahmed that Pakistan rose to the pinnacle of the T20I highs.

The story

Amid such announcement the board made the whole issue worse by posting a controversial tweet. The tweet was posted from the PCB’s handle just after the news of Sarfaraz Ahmed broke. The tweet in question showed a GIF of Pakistan players celebrating with Sarfaraz leaving the frame, in all likelihood from a training session.

The post went viral and the board’s role was criticized. Later the PCB posted another tweet apologizing for the previous one. They said that the timing was wrong and explained their intention. In defense, the PCB said that it was a part of the promotional campaign for the next T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in 2020 and posting was clashed with the announcement on Sarfaraz’s removal.

“The PCB apologies for this post and accepts the timing of it was wrong. This was a pre-planned post as part of the one-year to go #T20WorldCup promotional campaign. The timing of this post clashed with the captaincy announcement for which the PCB offers its regrets.”

Sarfaraz did not share his reaction on this.
